Why do flowers die? - A música brasileira e ango-saxônica no tríptico As Mil e Uma Noites (2015), de Miguel Gomes

Resumen

This paper reflects on the use of music in the triptych As Mil e Uma Noites (2015) by Portuguese director Miguel Gomes. We will focus the approach specifically on two key aspects that permeate the musical-dramaturgical construction of that work: the exaltation of Brazilian music of the 1970s (through songs by Tim Maia; Secos & Molhados; Novos Baianos) and the re-signification of classics of Anglo-Saxon romantic music of the 1980s (such as Say you, Say me; Classic; Lover Why).
To this end, we will go through, in a brief introduction, the trajectory of this inventive director until we get to our case study: As Mil e Uma Noites, Volume 1- O Inquieto; Volume 2 - O Desolado; Volume 3 - O Encantado.
As part of the proposed approach, we will underline the stylistic characteristics of the work with emphasis on the narrative procedures used by the director related to dramaturgical appreciation and musical diegesis.
