Abstract

Created in 2008, CIAC is a research unit evaluated by the Foundation for Science and Technology. It brings together researchers from the University of Algarve (host institution), the Higher School of Theater and Cinema (Lisbon Polytechnic Institute), the Maia Higher Institute, the Santarem Polytechnic Institute, the Higher Institute of Advanced Technologies, and the Open University.
This R&D Unit has been developing innovative research in the field of artistic (visual arts, cinema, theatre) and cultural studies, communication and, more recently, literary studies (digital archives, digital critical editions). It aims to develop applied research and research networks in arts and communication, as well as implement artistic creation laboratories in the areas of Theatre, Cinema and other arts, namely in the Mediterranean region.
Recently, a dozen researchers from CIAC created the Film Studies Group, coordinated by Jorge Carrega. Organized in 3 lines of research: “History(s) of Cinema in Portugal”; “Mediterranean Cinema(s)” and “Cinema and other Arts”, this research Group seeks to stimulate scientific production around the 7th art and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge produced at CIAC, through the development of research projects, organization of scientific events, and organization of scientific publications, as well as the establishment of partnerships with cultural and educational institutions at the local and national level.
