Abstract

This essay proposes a critical analysis of the film Persepolis (2007) directed by Marjane Satrapi (Iran, 1969-) and Vincent Paronnaud (France, 1970-). Their work is based on Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis (2000-2003) where she narrates, as a witness, the Iranian society, culture and politics during the 1979 revolution, as well as her own experience living in Switzerland and France. The purpose of this study is to bring reflections upon the struggles and obstacles she had to face as an exile in Europe and the traumatic souvenirs of the war and the revolution. This picture will show us a view between Orient and Occident cultures and an identity crisis caused by the war.

Keywords : Iran, Identity, Violence, War, Trauma.
