Résumé

Access to cinema as a pedagogical tool remains limited in addiction rehabilitation settings, despite its potential for introspection and identity building. This research analyzes the impact of cinema in these spaces, exploring its capacity to foster self-reflection and a sense of community. The study aims to evaluate how cinematic practice contributes to personal identity acceptance and the rehabilitation process, using selfportraiture as a starting point for both individual and collective exploration.
Over eight months, a film workshop was conducted in a rehabilitation clinic in Mexico City. Through exercises in photography, lighting, and personal storytelling, participants conceptualized their identity through a self-portrait that evolved from personal to collective significance. The progression of their relationship with the camera and their self-expression was documented throughout.
Initially, participants posed defiantly, projecting an intimidating image asking themselves, “How do I want to be seen?” They sought to portray authority, to be feared, creating a barrier before the lens. The camera-body relationship became central. Over time, as the camera rotated among participants even outside class their approach became more intimate. The camera began to probe their daily lives. My consistent presence as instructor and involvement beyond the classroom helped reveal a transformation: participants adopted more relaxed and authentic postures. This shift marked the beginning of self-portrait work after nearly seven months of connection.
Additionally, class exercises and audiovisual experimentation strengthened community bonds. Each participant took on a role in production, fostering collaboration and group responsibility. Cinema proved an effective tool for rehabilitation, offering a space for expression, identity formation, and collective engagement.
