Between Gesture and Memory: Cut-Out and Lost Matrix in the Exploration of Time.
Abstract
This paper discusses the creative process of the videos A Menina do Rio and Self, made in 2023, using cut-out techniques (animation) and lost matrix (engraving technique). Based on the animators Quirino Cristiani and Berthold Bartosc, and the variations of the cut-out technique developed by them, the authors of the paper sought to situate the work on two technical planes: engraving and animation, which allowed greater freedom in the assembly of the videos. The manual nature given to the works, through the incisions on the photographs used in the videos, brings them tension and reinforces the tactile character, which corroborates the relationship between technique and thought. Interested in Ricoeur’s conception of time as a narrative expression and driven by the interest in exploring themes such as time, memory and forgetting, herein the authors also sought means and forms that would enhance these questions, allowing them to unfold. To this end, the temporal experience was reconfigured through a visual narrative, based on a set of personal photographs of various dimensions, on which inscriptions were inserted.
