Chapter II _ Cinema - Cinema
Frederick Wiseman’s look at school
Abstract
This work proposes a comprehensive reflection on direct cinema, with a special focus on the work of documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. Emphasis will be given to one of his films about educational institutions (High School, USA, 1968), particularly the way life is depicted in that school and the social concern expressed. The creative treatment and methodology used are addressed, specifically the language, aesthetics, and some components of the social and ethical dimensions.
The article aims to highlight how the author captures the essence of the educational institution, revealing not only the daily life but also the underlying social issues. The school reality is captured by Wiseman’s camera, which acts as a discreet and silent witness, recording intimate moments and situations where emotional confrontations unfold, allowing the viewer an immersive experience of school environment.
