Abstract

The 20th century saw the emergence of the concept of White Cube as a privileged space for the presentation of modernist works. The bare white background made it possible to highlight the works on display while removing any interference that could affect their enjoyment and reading. In the 21st century, as a result of the increasing use of digital technologies, more and more artists are turning to moving image installations. In December 2020, Serralves Museum presented the first exhibition in Portugal by artist Nalini Malani. Featuring animations created between 1969 and 2020, the exhibition culminated in the immersive installation Can You Hear Me?. The artist’s journey is the starting point to analyze the transition from White Cube to Black Cube and the challenges it poses, highlighting the role of animation as a creative tool.
