Worldbuilding as a key element in the creation of transmedia narrative universes — an applicable approach to cinematography
Abstract
This paper discusses the role of worldbuilding in creating powerful narratives, strong characters and faithful fanbases. It analyzes successful franchises through standard worldbuilding theories in contrast with the method used in the genesis of The Rotfather transmedia narrative universe, developed by the brazilian research group G2E [Education and Entertainment Group] of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. This method puts the setting in the forefront of narrative development, inspired by the mechanics found in the turn-based strategy game Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. Through this interdisciplinary approach with the field of game design, it aims to propose a structured and efficient way of thinking worldbuilding for transmedia universes that can be applied to any kind of media they encompass, specially in the sphere of cinema.
