Abstract

How can cinema represent the adolescent body in freedom without reducing it to a mere object of observation? This research proposes a critical reflection on the concepts of freedom, embodiment, and spatial positioning in cinema, understanding cinematic position not simply as physical space but as an ethical and aesthetic configuration of the gaze.  Drawing upon the author’s experience in the making of the short film Silêncio da Primavera (2026), the study examines the fundamental question of camera placement when filming female adolescent bodies. By bringing into dialogue the filmic analysis of the characters in Naissance des pieuvres (2007) by Céline Sciamma and artistic practice, the research engages with theoretical contributions from John Stuart Mill, Angela Davis, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Rancière, Laura Mulvey, and John Berger. TThe study argues that camera placement constitutes a decisive ethical and aesthetic gesture, shaping the conditions through which adolescent bodies may be represented as subjects of experience, agency, and freedom rather than as passive objects of visual scrutiny.
