AVANCA | CINEMA 2026 – 17th International Conference on Cinema: Art, Technology, Communication

This issue of the AVANCA|CINEMA Journal is published in a particularly significant year. In 2026, we celebrate the 30th edition of the AVANCA – International Meeting of Cinema, Television, Video and Multimedia. Alongside this milestone, the 17th edition of AVANCA | CINEMA 2026 – International Conference of Cinema – Art, Technology, Communication brings together researchers from all around the world, confirming the scientific maturity of a project that has consistently fostered dialogue between artistic creation and scholarly research.
Since its inception, the Conference has approached cinema not merely as an object of aesthetic analysis but as a privileged field in which art, technology, and communication intersect. This perspective continues to shape the conference programme, reflecting the inherently interdisciplinary nature of contemporary film studies. Each edition brings together contributions that draw upon diverse methodologies, academic traditions, and cultural perspectives, demonstrating that cinema remains an exceptionally fertile field through which to understand the cultural, technological, and social transformations of our time.
The wide range of research presented in this volume reflects that vitality. The articles explore topics including filmmaking, narrative, aesthetics, film history, authorship, film festivals, audiovisual heritage preservation, animation, documentary, creative industries, emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, video games, education, digital media, and the new modes of production, circulation, and reception of moving images. This breadth of approaches confirms that cinema continues to provide a privileged framework for interdisciplinary research, capable of engaging with multiple fields of knowledge while responding to the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving audiovisual landscape.
The international scope of the Conference has enabled the development of a vibrant scholarly community in which researchers from universities and research centres across different continents meet to present their work, exchange methodologies, and establish new collaborations. This dynamic environment has given rise to the present publication. The AVANCA|CINEMA journal therefore represents a natural extension of the conference, providing broader international visibility to the research presented and contributing to the dissemination of current thinking in film and media studies.
All articles published in this volume have undergone a rigorous international double-blind peer-review process, conducted by specialists of recognised academic expertise. This editorial model continues to ensure high standards of scientific quality, independence, and academic integrity, allowing the publication to respond to the increasing demands of international research.
One of the defining characteristics of the AVANCA|CINEMA project is the value it places on face-to-face scholarly exchange. At a time when academic communication increasingly relies on digital platforms, we remain convinced that the public and on-site presentation of research, direct discussion between authors and participants, and critical debate on methodologies constitute an irreplaceable dimension of knowledge production. It is within this context that the conference annually awards the Eng. Fernando Gonçalves Lavrador Prize to the best on-site communication, as selected by an international jury of distinguished scholars. The prize recognises not only the scientific excellence but also the ability to communicate research effectively, highlighting the public presentation itself as an integral component of scholarly practice and as part of the knowledge construction process.
Across seventeen editions of the Conference and the corresponding scientific publication, it has been possible to witness the remarkable evolution of film and media studies, as well as the profound transformations affecting cinematic practice itself. Today, confronted with new challenges arising from artificial intelligence, immersive technologies, digital environments, and emerging forms of audiovisual creation and circulation, the need for international spaces dedicated to critical reflection, discussion, and knowledge exchange has become even more evident.
Celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the AVANCA therefore means recognising a collective achievement while simultaneously renewing our commitment to the future. A commitment to research that is open to the world, interdisciplinary and international; to fostering dialogue between science and artistic creation; and to reaffirming our conviction that cinema will continue to offer one of the most privileged place for reflection on contemporary socities , the technologies that shape them, and the creative forms that give them meaning.
It is in this spirit that we look towards the future, seeking to ensure that both the AVANCA | CINEMA Conference and the AVANCA|CINEMA Journal remain a leading platform for the dissemination of research, for bringing together scholars from different countries, cultures and academic traditions, and for building knowledge about cinema in its multiple relationships with art, technology, communication and society.
