Résumé

The popularization of AI tools will have a profound impact on audiovisual production. In France, the CNC report, “What impact will AI have on the film, audiovisual, and video game industries?”, published in April 2024, warns of the profound changes to the industry’s workflows, as well as the challenges and opportunities that such a shift represents. Since the report’s publication, the quality of images and sounds produced by generative models has improved considerably, to the point that the audiovisual content generated by the latest model from the Chinese company ByteDance, Seedance 2.0, has prompted concerns from major North American studios. They have demanded clarification regarding the copyright of the images used to train the model and have threatened legal action against the company.
Given the anticipated significant and potentially irreversible shift, how can higher education, and audiovisual studies in particular, take position to keep pace with the rapid evolution of these technologies?
What software tools are available, and what hardware is required to make their teaching viable?
What are the limitations of their use in the context of required productions, and how can they be integrated into traditional teaching methods?
This text will explore the potential adaptations of AI tools for audiovisual education through open-source software, as well as the software and hardware challenges of such a project.
